HMSO

In-house Publications Design

Recruited in 1974 with Jim Cairns and joined, a number of years later, by Dot Adams to establish and expand the Scottish design studio of the government publisher.

In that pre-privatisation era, HMSO was tasked with designing, printing and publishing all government print communications in Scotland. This included a hugely diverse range of national institutions and departments, covering virtually every aspect of government responsibility.

Design projects were commissioned by government departments but budgets rarely extended to cover fees for external services such as copywriting, photography or illustration which, if not supplied, often relied on the designer’s own creative invention to resolve.
